Passengers booking train tickets online through IRCTC can now secure travel insurance coverage of up to ₹10 lakh by paying just 45 paise. The facility is part of the Optional Travel Insurance Scheme (OTIS), launched by Indian Railways to enhance passenger safety and financial security in case of train-related mishaps.
According to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw’s statement in the Lok Sabha, insurance companies have settled 333 claims over the past five years, disbursing ₹27.22 crore to passengers or their families.
Coverage Details
The insurance covers death, disability, and injuries caused by train accidents, including derailments, collisions, and terrorist attacks.
Death: ₹10 lakh
Permanent Total Disability: ₹10 lakh
Permanent Partial Disability: Up to ₹7.5 lakh
Hospitalisation Expenses: Up to ₹2 lakh
Transportation of Mortal Remains: ₹10,000
How to Avail the Scheme
Book Online: Available only for e-tickets booked via IRCTC website or mobile app.
Opt-In: Select the travel insurance option while booking.
Pay Premium: A nominal ₹0.45 is added to the ticket fare.
Get Policy Details: Policy and nominee update link are sent via SMS/email after booking.
Update Nominee: Nominee details must be filled in through the insurer’s link for claims to be processed.
Who Can Avail It
The scheme is available only for passengers with Confirmed or RAC tickets.

Passengers booking tickets at physical railway counters
Waitlisted ticket holders
Children under 5 years of age
Foreign tourists booking via international portals
Claims Process
In case of an accident, passengers or their nominees must contact the insurance company directly with the required documents. The claim process is handled entirely by the insurer, with no involvement from IRCTC.
